Silver Reef Ghost Town

Found just above St. George, Utah along the I-15 corridor, the Ghost Town of Silver Reef has been revived. In the mid 1870's Silver Reef became a significant mining town after silver was discovered in the area sandstone. This is the only place in North America where silver has been found within this type of rock. This was a wild-west mining town of approximately 2,500 people (at it's peak) with saloons, restaurants, lodging establishments and several different cemeteries to satisfy the needs of the various religious groups. Many Chinese workers filled key positions within the community. Today some of the structures still remain and a few have been restored to their original splendor. A restaurant and an art gallery are available and the visitor to Silver Reef will enjoy driving and walking around the area to see the remains of what was once the largest town in southern Utah.
