Scenic highway 89:
Going east from Zion Mountain Ranch (10 minutes) get's you right onto Scenic Highway 89. Highway 89 passes through a lot of Utah - but the most scenic section begins as you go north toward Bryce Canyon (30 minutes). You'll pass through forested areas and many small towns such as Orderville and Glendale. We think you'll enjoy the little town of Panguitch (just past the highway 12 turn - and about 1 hour from Zion Mountain Ranch). Try the Cowboy Smokehouse for lunch and shop in some of this community's unique stores. You can also go south from Mt. Carmel toward the town of Kanab. Going this direction you'll pass Moqui Cave (tourist shop - cave in rock hillside) and the road to Coral Pink Sand Dunes (unique colored dunes - 7 miles off 89). In Kanab you may want to visit places like Frontier Movie Town (movie sets from days when westerns were filmed in Kanab). There are plenty of shops and restaurants for a few hours of fun in Kanab.
